If you have a furnace you must take care of it properly to keep it in good condition. One way to do this is to do maintenance on the furnace on a regular basis. To help you, below are two maintenance tips so you can start planning before spring arrives
Inspect the Filter
One of the easiest maintenance tips is to check the filter. You may forget about doing this, however. To know if it needs to be changed look at the color of the filter. Depending on the type of filter you have it should be white, tan, or grey. If the color is a completely different color than these, such as brown or a dark brown, it is time to change the filter.
When you change the filter, use a permanent marker and write the date on it. This way you will know when you installed the new filter. If you do not keep a clean air filter in your furnace this will affect many things. For example, an air filter traps dust and debris and keeps these things from getting into the air on onto your furniture. This is especially true if someone in your home smokes inside or if you have pets that shed.
For an added tip, if you have pets or someone that smokes, put about 20 drops of scented essential oil in different areas on the new filter before you install it, and you will have the aroma throughout your home each time the furnace runs.
You should have your furnace maintained by a professional at least twice a year. The best time to do this is spring and then again in the fall before the cold weather moves in. Spring is an important time as your furnace has been running all winter and may need a tune-up.
The contractor will check all internal components of your furnace, will check the pilot light if you have a gas furnace, and clean the inside of it. The contractor will check the thermostat for the furnace to ensure it is working properly. The duct work may be checked for problems, such as rips or tears, which will cause air leakage.
If your furnace is old spring would be a great time to have it replaced. The contractor you hire can tell you if this is something you should do. If so, they can give you information about the furnace installation. Contact a service, like Nova Air Conditioning & Heating , to get started.
